Interviews

What is the right thing to do when midstream in a chain of interviews, set up over several non-consecutive days, when you know the job just isn't right for you? Conventional wisdom says one should be polite and tell the company you are not interested as soon as you're sure it is not a "good fit" (as recruiters are so fond of saying -- which is an interesting metaphor, that is, job being like a new clothing outfit).

To be on the safe side, one could stick through the process. You never know if the next person might reveal the hidden gem that makes the opportunity interesting and exciting.

Of courses, usually in these situations, one has several opportunities at different stages in the pipeline. Is it wrong to be sitting in one interview contemplating why this position is nowhere near as good as one that has not progressed as far, or should each position be weighed on its own merits, independent of others that may or may not pan out?

Gadgets

My nephew has come to visit us for the week, sort of a short vacation before heading back to school in a few weeks. He is thoroughly enthralled by the gadget craze. He just got a new cell phone that he talks on incessantly. He has also asked me to buy him an MP3 player. Fortunately, he has some tact; he asked me to buy the player and let him "work it off" doing chores like washing the car, mowing the lawn, etc. I told him we'd order one online to get a better price and have it shipped to his house in PA. That, however, didn't go over too well because he wants in time for a beach trip he is taking next week with a friend's family. After some quick contemplation, I offered him my 1GB Sandisk MP3 player with built-in FM tuner and voice recorder. I hardly use the MP3 player and usually just use the device as a USB storage mechanism for podcasts that I listen to in the car with my Ziga MP3 Player with built in FM Modulator. I can use a simple USB flash drive for that. Now I just have to find a new one. Isn't PriceGrabber great?

Reporting solutions

I've been looking at reporting solutions, commercial and open source, as part of a non-work related exercise for a work colleague. Obviously, Jasper was on the list.

I just came across OpenReports, a web frontend for Jasper, and it looks hot. A somewhat interesting post on Brian Burridge's blog tells me it may not have gained traction yet because of the numerous development-deployment options (e.g. iReport, JasperAssistant/Eclipse, etc.), but at least people are trying.

Just wanted to get this down as a reminder...

Prophesying

Under the title Will AJAX Threaten Windows Desktop?, a lot of pundits have come out of the closet to through their two cents into the ring. (Could I mix more metaphors?) I'm keeping this one because, as with most radical prophesying, I think this one will be interesting to look back on in a year or so.

New baby

Mel and Mark had their baby last Thursday, Aug. 4th. We went to see him yesterday. Like most babies just a few days old, he's small and slightly fuzzy. His eyes do not focus much yet, but we did have the pleasure of seeing him awake.

Of all the people I know, I would venture that Mark will be one of the best fathers.
